Upper Extremity:
An upper extremity prosthesis is one that will allow a patient to perform activates that involve both hands. These prostheses operate by straps attached to the contra lateral side or by electricity. Upper extremity prosthesis requires the ultimate in creativity. It is difficult for a patient to accept a prosthesis because it will never function as well as the extremity that was lost. It is a challenge for a prosthetist to design a prosthesis that will be comfortable and provide the function that the patient desires and deserves.
The staff at Lawall will evaluate the patient and family to determine what the needs of the patient will be. Concurrently the staff will lay out all the options from a body powered prosthesis to a myoelectric prosthesis to a functional cosmetic prosthesis. At the same time the patient will be evaluated and educated as to what types of terminal devices are available for work and recreation. Once the patient has been fitted and taught to use the prosthesis he will be followed up with routinely to evaluate how we can improve on the new devise.
